An Illinois man deliberately rammed his vehicle into the back of a police SUV during a routine traffic stop, then immediately admitted to officers that he carried out the attack because he hates law enforcement, according to authorities in Fairview Heights who released dramatic body camera footage of the incident.
Keajion Jennings, twenty-eight years old, faces multiple felony charges including criminal damage to government property and three counts of aggravated battery after he crashed his Camaro into Officer Travis Montgomery's patrol vehicle with such force that it pushed the police SUV into the civilian car that had been pulled over. The crash caused more than ten thousand dollars in damage to the patrol vehicle and impaled both vehicles together.
"I hate cops, man. I was bored," Jennings told officers immediately after exiting his vehicle following the collision.
The incident occurred around nine in the morning on September twenty-fourth when Montgomery had stopped a Nissan Rogue for expired license plates that were five years past due. Body camera footage shows the officer approaching the passenger window of the stopped vehicle when Jennings' Camaro slammed into the rear of the police SUV at high speed, sending it careening forward into the civilian vehicle.
Montgomery escaped serious injury only because he was outside his vehicle at the time of impact, standing near the civilian car he had pulled over. The two occupants of the stopped vehicle were also unharmed in the collision and received only a warning for their registration violation. The officer later returned to duty after being evaluated for minor injuries sustained in the attack.
Jennings allegedly told officers at the scene that he had consumed both alcohol and marijuana edibles before deliberately targeting the police vehicle. He confessed that he intentionally hit the patrol car due to his hatred of law enforcement, according to the Fairview Heights Police Department statement released after the incident.
The Fairview Heights Police Department released the body camera footage after receiving several Freedom of Information Act requests for its disclosure. Illinois State Police were called to conduct an impartial investigation into the incident, and Jennings was arrested at the scene and taken to the St. Clair County jail where he awaits trial on the felony charges.
The attack comes amid heightened tensions between law enforcement and anti-police activists across Illinois and the nation. Similar incidents have occurred in the Chicago area, where federal immigration enforcement agents have faced violent confrontations with protesters, including vehicles deliberately ramming law enforcement officers during immigration operations.
Police officials emphasized that this type of premeditated attack on law enforcement officers represents a disturbing trend that puts the lives of police and civilians at risk. The fact that Montgomery was conducting a routine traffic stop for a minor violation when Jennings decided to weaponize his vehicle against police underscores the dangers officers face even during what should be standard encounters with the public they serve.
